Elizabeth W. Estiel moved to Menard County, Illinois while a still a child. In June 1848, she married Thomas Cantrall, with whom she had four children—a daughter and three sons. After her husband died in a tragic accident in 1856, her middle son, William, took over the family farm. By 1860, she still possessed enough resources to support herself and her children, owning a personal estate valued at $1,400 even though her real estate holdings were valued at just $21.
