Charles moved to Jo Daviess County, Illinois, some time before 1830, when he had six people in his household. He represented Mercer, Rock Island, and Jo Daviess counties in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1836-1838. In 1837, he married Eliza Darling in Jo Daviess County.
