Clayton married Elizabeth Clayton in Kentucky in 1824 before moving to Illinois in 1834. After several years spent in Morgan County, they soon settled near present-day Chatham in Sangamon County, where Clayton was a farmer. In 1860, he owned $4,800 worth of real estate.
