Cogdal lived in Sangamon County by 1836, and in 1838, he married Lucinda Loyd. They settled in Menard County, where he was a stone mason and a farmer. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Cogdal enlisted in Company E of the 14th Illinois Infantry.
