In 1830, Cox lived in Sangamon County, Illinois and had three other persons in his household. During the Black Hawk War, he served in Abraham Lincoln's company of mounted militia. In 1833, he purchased 40 acres of land in Sangamon County and purchased an additional 40 acres in 1836. By 1840, he had moved to Benton County, Missouri, where he lived as a farmer for the rest of his life.
