A shoemaker by trade, Compton moved from Virginia to Indiana to Illinois, finally settling in Charleston, Illinois, in 1833. Compton served as a constable from 1835 to 1837 and as sheriff of Coles County from 1838 to 1846. In 1850, Compton was a merchant in Charleston, and he owned $3,300 worth of real estate.
