Samuel Connely was an early settler of Edgar County, Illinois, and purchased 40 acres of land in 1837. Connely represented Edgar County in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1836-1838, after Augustus C. French resigned his seat. In 1850, Connely was working as a County Judge and was living with his wife Ruth and four children, owning $5,000 in real estate. He won election to the Illinois House of Representatives and represented Edgar County again from 1857-1858.
