Thomas Correll was a farmer. Correll married Sarah (Sally) McDaniel in Harrison County, Kentucky, in 1830. They moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, that same year, and settled near Mechanicsburg. In 1850, the couple lived on a farm in Sangamon County with their eight children, all of whom were born in Illinois. They owned real estate valued at $5,000. By 1860, Correll owned real estate valued at $14,000 and had a personal estate of $2,000. In politics, Correll identified first with the Whig Party and later with the Democratic Party. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
