Crowder married Mary Laswell in Kentucky and they moved their family to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1826. Together they had ten children before Mary's death. Crowder re-married to Ursula Albans in 1854, and they had four children together before her death. In September 1862, Crowder re-married to Elizabeth Cox, with whom he had one child. Crowder was a farmer. In 1860, he owned $22,000 worth of real estate and $5,000 worth of personal property.
