Cuthbert, John A.

Brother of Alfred Cuthbert, John A. Cuthbert graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1805. He studied law and earned admittance to the bar in 1809, commencing practice in Eatonton, Georgia. In 1811, 1813, and 1817, he won election to the Georgia House of Representatives. During the War of 1812, he commanded a volunteer company. In 1814 and 1815, he was a member of the Georgia Senate. In 1818, Georgia voters elected him as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1822, President James Monroe appointed Cuthbert as a commissioner to negotiate treaties with the Creek and Cherokee Indians. He was again elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1822. In 1830, 1833, and 1834, Cuthbert served as secretary of the Georgia Senate. In 1831, he became the editor of the Federal Union in Milledgeville, Georgia, eventually becoming its sole proprietor. In 1837, he left Georgia for Mobile, Alabama to practice law. In 1840, Mobile County voters elected Cuthbert judge of the county court. In 1852, the governor of Alabama appointed him judge of the Mobile County Circuit Court. He eventually retired from that position, and practiced law until his death.
