Davidson was a resident of Sangamon County, Illinois, from at least the mid-1830s. In 1835, he married Lucy Lee Smith. Davidson and his brothers were among the first merchants in Petersburg, Illinois. In 1840, the Davidsons lived in Menard County, and George was employed in manufacture and trade. In 1850, has was employed as a baker in Petersburg. In 1860, he was working as a painter. In 1865, he married a second time, to Eliza Eaty. Religiously, Davidson was a Methodist.
