Davison was a physician, newspaper editor, and landowner. Prior to moving to Illinois, he lived in Allegany County, New York, where he held a number of local offices, and Ashland County, Ohio. He migrated to Illinois in 1833, settling in Tazewell County, where he purchased 240 acres of public land. In 1836, he married Abigail C. Greenough, with whom he had four children. In 1850, he was practicing medicine in Canton and owned real estate valued at $10,000. In 1851, he became the publisher and editor of the
