Eckert, George N.

Eckert studied medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1824. He started a medical practice in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was one of the organizers of Berks County Medical Society in 1824. Eckert moved to Pine Grove and worked in the coal and iron trade. He won election to the U. S. House of Representatives, as a Whig, serving from 1847 to 1849, alongside Abraham Lincoln. In 1851, President Millard Fillmore appointed Eckert director of the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia, a position he held until 1853.
