While still living in his native state, Fagan married Peninah Fruit, with whom he had four children, including John and George Fagan. They moved to Virginia and then to Christian County, Kentucky. In 1819, Fagan settled in southern Illinois, and a year, later, moved to Sangamon County, where he eventually built a cabin on the south side of Jefferson Street, west of 1st Street in Springfield. In 1831, Fagan and his family moved to a farm three miles north of town.
