Farmer purchased two tracts of land in Cass County, Illinois, in 1831. Farmer served in Abraham Lincoln's company of the 4th Regiment of Mounted Volunteers in the Black Hawk War. In November 1832, he married Nancy Wilburne, with whom he had at least five children. Sometime in the 1830s, he left Illinois for the Iowa Territory. In 1840, he was living in Henry County, Iowa Territory, with his wife and three children. In 1850, he was a farmer living with his wife and children in Marion, Iowa Territory. He owned $1,200 in real property.
