Graham moved from Kentucky to New Salem, Illinois, in 1828. A schoolteacher, he first taught in a nearby Baptist church and then eventually in the town's first school, where he tutored Abraham Lincoln. He later moved to Petersburg, where he was living with his wife Sarah in 1860.
