Nathaniel W. Green relocated from his native New Jersey as a young man, settling in Delavan, Illinois, where he read law and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He served as a circuit judge for twelve years and spent four as a member of the appellate court at Mt. Vernon. In 1860, Green owned real property valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate of $1,000. In 1865, Green moved to Pekin and became a partner in the firm of Roberts & Green.
Green married Charlotte H. Storms in July 1852. He had five living children at the time of his death.
