In 1828, Hart purchased federal land along Rock Creek, in what is now southern Menard County. The same year, he married Amanda Houghton. In 1834, Abraham Lincoln surveyed land owned by Hart, which Hart sold immediately before his death. In 1836, Lincoln represented the buyer of the land in a suit against Hart's heirs.
