By 1832, Hash lived in a part of Sangamon County, Illinois, that would later become Menard County. Hash served in John Summers' (later Seth Pratt's) company of volunteer infantry during the Black Hawk War in 1832. In 1834, he married Sarah Ellender Ball, who went by Ellender or Ellen. They farmed and raised their family in Menard County.
