Hall moved with his parents and siblings to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1828. In 1839, he married Eveline Jacobs, and they had eight children together. They lived near Loami in western Sangamon County, where Thompson was a farmer. In 1860, he owned $11,700 worth of real estate and $2,000 worth of personal property.
