Charles B. Hitt, businessman and land agent, settled permanently in Augusta, Georgia in 1826. He initially worked in the cotton business for the firm of Bridges & Smith, then later formed the wholesale and retail grocery partnership of Hitt & Dill. After several years in the grocery line Hitt opened a land office. While at the time of the 1860 census Hitt reported real and personal wealth totalling only $325, as well as ownership of one enslaved woman, he reportedly saw financial success as a land agent but suffered reverses during the Civil War. Hitt married Susan A. Goodman in 1832 and the pair were survived by five children.
