When war with the Indians threatened the Kentucky frontier in 1812, Holt joined the army. In March 1812, he received a commission as captain in the 17th Infantry, U.S. Army, in which he commanded the eighth company. He participated in many of the engagements fought by the 17th Infantry during the ensuing War of 1812, including the Battle of Fort Meigs. He commanded the eighth company until his discharge in June 1815.
