Hutchason kept a store at the future site of the village of Humboldt, Illinois. He served as Coles County surveyor from 1843 to 1847, and as sheriff from 1846 to 1850. In 1850, he was a cabinet maker living in Charleston, and he owned $2,000 worth of real estate. By 1857, he had re-entered the dry-goods business, and in 1860 he owned $7,000 worth of real estate and $4,000 worth of personal property.
