Huckleberry, John W.

In 1833, Huckleberry moved with his parents and siblings to Sangamon County, where he became a farmer. He served as a private in Company D of the Fourth Illinois Infantry during the Mexican War, serving from 1846 to 1847. Returning to Sangamon County after the war, he married Barbara S. Derry, with whom he had six children. In 1862, he enlisted for three years' service in the Civil War, serving in Company A of the Seventy-Third Illinois Infantry. In January 1863, he was captured at Stone's River, paroled, and later exchanged. He then served in the Invalid Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1865.
