Hunt, Samuel

Born near Lexington, Kentucky, Samuel Hunt was a tailor, jailer, public servant, and postmaster. He moved to Jacksonville, Illinois in 1830, and worked as a tailor and a jailer for a time. Beginning in 1849 and until at least 1853, he served as a trustee for the Institution for the Education of the Blind. In March 1853, he received appointment as postmaster for Jacksonville. He held this position until April 1861. In 1857, the Illinois House of Representatives appointed him assistant sergeant at arms. By 1860, he lived with his wife Frances and their three children and had amassed $2,500 in real estate and $300 in personal property. He died of pneumonia.
