Hunt moved with his family from Kentucky to Edwards County, Illinois, in 1816. In 1824, he was on the grand jury that heard the first murder case in the county. From 1830 to 1832, he served as sheriff. From 1834 to 1837, he represented Edwards County in the House of Representatives. In 1837, he purchased forty acres near Albion, where he lived until his death.
