Irwin moved with his parents from his native state to Sangamon County, Illinois, in the fall of 1828, settling near Richland Creek. In 1851, he married Matilda D. Campbell, with whom he had one child. They settled near present-day Salisbury in Menard County. In 1860, Irwin was working as a miller and owned real estate valued at $900 and a personal estate of $300.
