Kaufman, David S.

David S. Kaufman was an attorney, Texas politician, and U.S. congressman. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1833. He studied law and gained admission to the bar in Natchez, Mississippi. At first he practiced law in Natchitoches, Louisiana, but he moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, in 1837. Kaufman was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1839 to 1843 and served in the Texas Senate from 1843 to 1845. In 1845, he was appointed charge d'affaires of Texas to the United States. Upon the admission of Texas as a state, Kaufman won election as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives, and served from March 1846 until his death.
