King pursued classical studies and graduated from Harvard College in 1823. He studied law, but did not practice, instead he engaged in agricultural pursuits. King served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1836 and 1837. He served in the Massachusetts Senate from 1838 to 1841, and was elected senate president in 1840. He returned to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1843 and 1844, serving as speaker in 1844. King won election, as a Whig, to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843 and served until his death.
