George W. Knadler, a carpenter and mechanic, was born in Virginia but spent most of his life in Clinton, Illinois. He married Emily Niles in February 1845 in Champaign County, Ohio, and the couple had three children. In May 1853, Knadler was a member of the jury that found Moses Loe, a client of Abraham Lincoln, guilty of manslaughter in the stabbing death of James Gray. In 1860, Knadler owned real estate valued at $3,000 and had a personal estate value of $800.
