Lane moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, sometime before 1830 and remained in an area that would later be subsumed into Menard County. In 1835 and 1836, he purchased several tracts of land in said county. By 1848, Lane was living in Mason County. He worked as a farmer in his new home and lived with his wife Nancy and their seven children. By 1860, he had amassed $3,140 in real estate and $525 in personal property.
