George W. Lawrence was an attorney. In September 1847, he married Nancy Ann Neal in Clark County, Ohio. The couple would have at least five children together. Lawrence earned admission to the Illinois bar on May 27, 1854, after being examined by a committee that included Abraham Lincoln and Leonard Swett. He became a prominent attorney in Vermilion County, Illinois, the extreme eastern end of the Eighth Judicial Circuit. In 1860, he owned $4,000 in real and personal property and was living in Danville with his wife and five children.
