John M. Logan was a farmer in Douglas County, Illinois. In 1839, Logan acquired eighty acres of public land southwest of Okaw in what would become Bourbon Township. In 1849, he received 160 acres of public land by warrant in what would become Arcola Township. In the 1850s, Logan added 520 acres of public land to his holdings in Bourbon Township. He married Mary C. Moore in November 1852. In 1860, he was working as a farmer on his land southwest of Okaw. He and Mary were raising three children, and Logan owned real estate valued at $25,500 and a personal estate valued at $3,500.
