John Louthan, a farmer, married Margaret Carter in Frederick, Virginia on February 23, 1818, and the couple had at least six children. Margaret died in 1844, and two years later Louthan married Sarah Hains on October 17, 1846, in Coles County, Illinois. Earlier that year, in February 1846, Louthan became postmaster of Hermitage, a position he held until April 1851. In 1850, he was farming and owned real property valued at $3,275. By 1860, Louthan owned real estate valued at $1,600 and a personal estate valued at $1,400.
