While living in Kentucky, Mallory served in the War of 1812. In 1821, he married Nancy Dawson, with whom he had nine children. In 1827, they moved their family to Sangamon County, Illinois, where they settled in Clear Lake Township. In 1832, Mallory served as a sergeant in a Sangamon County militia regiment in the Black Hawk War. Mallory and his wife were members of the Baptist Church. A lifelong farmer, in 1860, Mallory owned $9,000 worth of real estate.
