In October 1831, Mann moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, eventually purchasing land and establishing a farm. In January 1832, he married Elizabeth King, with whom he had seven children. During the Black Hawk War, he volunteered for duty in the same militia regiment as Abraham Lincoln. A Democrat, Mann unsuccessfully ran for the Illinois House of Representatives in 1836. His wife Elizabeth died in 1861, and Mann re-married to Ellen Brimbarger, with whom he had eight additional children.
