Martinette Hardin McKee was the younger sister of John J. Hardin. On September 27, 1842, she married Alexander R. McKee in Jacksonville, Illinois. The couple settled in Lancaster, Kentucky, where Alexander served as clerk of the Garrard County Court. He retained that job until 1851, when he became a coal merchant. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Alexander as consul to Panama. The McKees had six children.
