Miller came to New Salem, Illinois, from Adair, Kentucky, sometime between 1830 and 1832. He became the town blacksmith and wagon-maker. Miller bought a farm outside of town in 1837 but moved to Missouri sometime before 1850. By 1860, he was farming in Benton, Missouri, and owned $2,000 in real estate and $650 in personal property. He was a Baptist.
