James G. Miles was living in Danville, Illinois and working as a tailor in 1850. That same year, he held real estate valued at $300 and, ten years later, he owned real estate valued at $7,000 and $200 in personal property. Miles enlisted as a sergeant in Company E of the Thirty-Fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment in September 1861 and was discharged the following February due to disability. He married first, Amanda Jane Sconce in 1845, with whom he had five children, and second, Mary D. Hoffman Towle in 1882.
