Mosteller as a young man moved from his native state to Butler County, Ohio. He and his family later moved to Union County, Indiana, only to return to Butler County, Ohio. In the spring of 1830, Mosteller and his family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling in what would become Salisbury Township. Shortly after moving to Butler County from North Carolina, Mosteller married Phoebe Sackett, with whom he had six children.
