Morris lived in Sangamon County as early as 1830. He served as a private in the Fourth Illinois Infantry during the Mexican-American War. In 1845, he married Minerva Purse in Menard County. By 1850, they had moved to Polk County, Iowa, where Morris worked as a millwright.
