Morris was a farmer. In 1844, he married Sarah Huffmaster, and they raised a large family near Loami in western Sangamon County, Illinois. Morris served as a private in the Fourth Illinois Infantry during the Mexican War. Between 1860 and 1870, he moved to Crawford County, Kansas.
