At the age of twenty-two, Nance married Sarah Skaggs, with whom he had four children. In 1830, Nance and his family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling in that part of the county that would eventually become part of Cass County. He purchased 200 acres of public land in the eastern and northeastern parts of the county. Sally Nance died of malarial fever, and in 1837, Nance married Elizabeth Lucas, with whom he had nine children. In 1865, he left Illinois for Kansas, settling on a farm in Crawford County, where he lived until his death. He was a Democrat.
