David Nichols was a farmer. In January 1850, Nichols married Sophia Rush, with whom he had five children. In 1860, he was living in Edgar County, Illinois, and owned real property valued at $4,000 and had a personal estate of $1,000. Nichols and his family moved from Illinois to Kansas after the Civil War. He was a member of the Odd Fellows.
