Joseph Patterson lived in Vermilion County as early as 1829, when he purchased 120 acres of public land in the county. During the Black Hawk War, he served from May to June 1832 as a sergeant major in Colonel Isaac R. Moore' s Regiment of Vermilion County Volunteers. In 1833, he was named a director of the newly-formed Vincennes and Chicago Road Company and a commissioner to locate a road between Danville and Ottawa. Patterson ran unsuccessfully for the Illinois General Assembly in 1838. He was survived by his wife, Docia Patterson.
