Charles A. Peltier, sailor, attended school until the age of twelve, when he embarked on a maritime career on the Great Lakes, working first as a cook on various ships, then rising through the ranks to take command of a vessel, the Crevolia, in 1854. He became captain of the brig Roscius by 1856, and served in this capacity for two seasons, carrying goods to a variety of Great Lakes ports, including Chicago. The brig was then purchased by a Chicago-based owner who continued Peltier as master of the Roscius until 1867, at which point Peltier returned to employment in his native Detroit and continued his career on the Great Lakes. He married Philomene Corbin in 1856 and the pair had seven children.
