Peleg S. Perley, a lawyer and judge, grew up in Livermore, Maine, before attending Bowdoin College at age sixteen and graduating with Latin honors. Upon graduation, Perley taught high school in Portland, Maine, and read law. He earned admission to the bar and practiced in New Albany, Indiana, for a year before moving to Henry, Illinois. There he met Nancy Morrison from New Hampshire. The couple married in July 1857 and had six children. In 1858, Perley was appointed to represent Marshall County at the Republican State Convention. Perley practiced law in Illinois for thirty years.
