Phelps moved to Loami, Illinois, in 1836 or 1837. In 1838, he married Mehatabel (Mehetibel) Colburn, who died in March 1842. In January 1843, he wed Fanny Colburn, a union that produced two children. In 1849, Phelps and his family moved to California, settling in Nevada County, where Phelps took up mining. He died after being crushed while going through one of the mines he owned.
