Frederick S. Potter, an attorney, moved to Illinois as a young child. He relocated to Henry, Illinois, when he was sixteen and began working as a clerk and then as a merchant. Potter began to read law in 1862 and was admitted to the bar two years later. He served as a member of the bar for about thirty-eight years.
Potter married Louisa Dawson and the couple had three children. Louisa died in July 1871 and Potter remarried Isabel House in 1874. That couple also had three children.
