Rickard moved with his parents to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1830. He married Harriet Talbott in 1838, with whom he had five children. In 1840, he had two other people living in his household. Rickard retained Abraham Lincoln in Richardson v. Rickard. He was the brother of John G. Rickard.
